DIY Heat-transfer Vinyl Hashtag Onesies

DIY Silhouette project! Make cute #hashtag onesies using heat-transfer vinyl.

Pregnancy is such a whirlwind, right? I was lucky enough that one of my best friends was pregnant at the same time as me! She was due a month before me and also having a boy! Because of our crazy RN work schedules, we don't see each other super often, but it was soooo nice having someone I could relate to during pregnancy. And now with a newborn, it's even better! Hanging out with another momma or being able to send a text when new mommyhood has you stumped on something is such a blessing. And I'm so excited for our little guys to be old enough to enjoy play dates together!

Anyway, both of our little babes had Instagram hashtags before they were even born. So I thought some cute personalized hashtag onesies would be fun! I'm slowly trying to get the hang of my Silhouette cutting machine, and this was the perfect opportunity to practice!

How to make your own printed hashtag onesies:

I actually had trouble finding plain long sleeve onesies (for our winter babies) in any color other than white. A friend recommended checking out H&M. I had no idea they even had baby clothes! Well, turns out they sell plain onesies in several colors! I ordered these grey ones for this project along with some other colors for Cade.

Then, I created the hashtag designs in Silhouette Studio. I'm not going to go through that step by step, but you can find great tutorials for how to thicken thin fonts and how to mirror your text for heat transfer on Silhouette School.

I programmed my Silhouette to cut out my hashtag designs on heat-transfer vinyl from My Vinyl Direct, which is a great budget friendly vinyl source that also carries some Silhouette brand products. After cutting, I peeled the backing off of the vinyl and weeded the excess vinyl using a spatula and hook. Remember that with the sticky side facing up, your text should appear backwards. Once you lay the sticky side against your fabric, it should read correctly. I carefully centered the designs at chest level on each onesie.

Next, I placed a silicone sheet on top of the vinyl and applied heat with the iron. I left the iron on each section for about 45 seconds. I found I needed to press down on the iron pretty firmly in order to get each edge of the letters to stick.

Allow vinyl to cool, then slowly peel the clear backing from the vinyl letters. Tah dah!

I can't even tell you how thrilled I was with how they turned out! Creating my own shirts wasn't nearly as tough as I thought it would be and the onesies looked so cute!!! Now that our little guys are here, check 'em out (and can we please talk about those adorable round bellies?!?!).

I can't wait for these two cuties to become friends! ...and to make more cute shirts! :)
