My husband and I love entertaining. We love hosting family or a few close friends for small get togethers, dinners, or parties. There's just something so enjoyable about filling our home with the people we love. So when we were recently on the hunt for a new home, part of our criteria was a house with enough space for entertaining. Our new house is just perfect for hosting guests. It has a nice outdoor space, and inside, the dining room sits perfectly, right between the kitchen and living room.

Fall is our favorite time of year for entertaining. We love to have guests over to watch football on Sundays, for a bonfire once the weather cools down, or for dinner as the holidays approach. We will also likely be having a housewarming party this fall once we are all settled into our new home!

One of the things I love to do as the entertaining season approaches, is decorate our dining room. Having the table set and ready to go makes the space feel more festive, and it also creates a very inviting and welcoming vibe for guests.

Part of the excitement of getting to entertain around the holidays is getting to use our fine china dishes. There are very few occasions we actually get to use them, so I like to take advantage of the holidays! This year, I wanted to keep them on display throughout the season, so I wanted to find a way to tie them in with our farmhouse style and some fall decorations. With a quick trip to our local Cost Plus World Market in Rockville, I was able to put together a beautiful farmhouse glam tablescape using our china.  I even made some faux mercury glass pumpkins to glam it up even more. Let me show you how easy they are to make, and then check out the full tablescape after the tutorial!

How to make mercury glass pumpkins:

Making these mercury glass pumpkins is so simple and adds the perfect touch of glam to your fall farmhouse decor. I wanted to add a bit of fall coloring to my table, so I chose two styles of orange ceramic pumpkins, but if you prefer the traditional look of mercury glass, look for clear glass pumpkins instead. Search your local craft store or dollar store for glass or ceramic pumpkins.

Gather your supplies and add a 50:50 mix of white vinegar and water into the spray bottle.

Lightly mist the pumpkin with the vinegar mixture. The goal is to have small droplets sitting on the pumpkin.

After shaking the spray paint can, spray a light coat over the entire pumpkin. This paint is runny, so don't over do it or you will have drips on your pumpkin. Let it sit for a few seconds. The vinegar will repell the paint in the bubbled areas and will start to eat away at it a little bit.

Use a paper towel to lightly blot some of the vinegar droplets to achieve a perfect mercury glass look. The paint dries quickly, so after just a few minutes, you'll be ready to set your table!

How to design a tablescape for fall:

Our china set has a silver band around the edge as well as a silver wave design. I wanted to accentuate the silver by bringing in some other metallic elements. Mercury glass votives, a metallic fall garland, wood and metal candle holders, and some DIY mercury glass pumpkins, all helped pull the glam look together and seamlessly blend the classic china.

To add to the farmhouse feel, I added some more neutral accents. The wooden pillar candle holders, woven placemats, and black chargers all add a touch of farmhouse charm.

I have always loved our black Verona dining table and chairs, but the dining room in our new house is lacking in natural light with only one small window, so I chose a light colored runner and set of napkins to help the space feel brighter. The black grain sack stripes add more farmhouse character and also help balance the black table and black chargers

(PS- you know what I love about farmhouse style dining tables, or having any kind of farmhouse furniture?! If you have kids, you don't have to worry about them ruining the furniture! The scratches, knicks, and stains all blend in and add to the rustic character.)

I really love these table linens and will probably leave them out year round. They're perfect for our space and can easily be dressed up or down for the occasion!

The fall garland is one of my other favorite pieces. It adds a bit more sparkle, but it also adds a lovely touch of fall with the warm colors and pieces of nature.

One of my favorite ways to dress up a table is to weave a seasonal garland in between candleholders. This garland has a wire that runs the entire length which makes it really easy to bend to create a nesting place for your candles.

I really love the layered look of placemats, chargers, plates, and napkins for any style of tablescape. In this case, I used it as a chance to tie everything together- neutral, farmhouse, glam, and fall. The DIY mercury glass pumpkins made a great final touch on top of each napkin. You can save 50% on dining furniture, 20% on bar carts, and 30% on table linens. I will definitely be taking advantage of the 20-50% off chandeliers and pendant lights because our current light fixture doesn't give off enough light for our very dark room.
