Simple and traditional holiday dining room

A simplified traditional Christmas dining room and tablescape

Our dining room is always one of my favorite rooms to decorate for the seasons. It's the first room you see when you walk through our front door, so styling it for holidays is a fun first impression. And we rarely use it unless we are entertaining, so it typically stays in a pristine decorated state that whole season! Every year since we've moved here, I have shared my holiday dining room, and it's fun to see how much my style has evolved over the past few years. As this old farmhouse has helped me embrace a love of traditional design mixed with a touch of modern and minimal, this year I am showing you a simple, neutral holiday dining room incorporating a few of my favorite things- the color green, nature, and a little bit of brass. 😊

Truth be told, I've been a little slow at my Christmas decorating this year. I blame it on the third trimester. Or the two toddlers. 😉 So when my friend Micheala from Micheala Diane Designs asked if I wanted to join her in a holiday room tour blog hop, I jumped at the reason to get my butt in gear and get decorating!!! Micheala is super sweet and has beautiful modern farmhouse style and we both share a love of simplicity in our decor. Her spaces are clean and bright. Our friend Diana from Diana Marie Home will be joining us also. She's a fellow old house owner and antique lover. I've linked to both of them at the bottom of this post and encourage you to check out the holiday bedrooms they are sharing if you're looking for more inspiration!

Since moving into this house, I have realized how much I love bringing the outdoors in.

Our one acre yard is full of trees and plant life, so year round there is something available for cuttings. I have really embraced this over the last year (who can pass up free greenery?!), so I knew I would be incorporating it into my holiday dining room.

Everyone's favorite part of the dining room is always that antique cabinet, so let's start there! (Okay, it's my own favorite part too!)

I added a simple garland on top. (I admit, this one is faux! 😉 ) I love how it adds a little contrast to that beautiful warm wood.

On the table, I created an easy runner with clippings from the yard. I started with a base of pine needles, and then I layered in cedar, fir, boxwood, and laurel.

The midcentury candlestick holders add brass to balance the gold chargers and also give that touch of modern and minimal that I love.

For the place settings, I used the same gold chargers and white ceramic plates from the dollar store that I used in last year's kitchen tablescape.

I tied the napkins with a simple green satin ribbon and tucked in a sprig of cedar.

From the other corner of the room, you can see our sideboard. I also kept it simple with some small trees and candlesticks.

I swapped out the vintage art for a minimal quote print I created. You can get your copy of this "Oh holy night" art here. It's my favorite Christmas song.

Facing the other direction, you can see a better view of the tongue and groove wall and the artwork from Minted. I'm keeping an eye out for large scale art to go here that might be better suited for winter, but I still love all of the green on this piece!

The mix of green and brass is always my favorite, and I love how green can be incorporated so naturally. This is probably my favorite tablescape I've done so far!! And it was so affordable... free greenery, dollar store plates and chargers, thrifted candle holders, and a linen table cloth I already had on hand.

Decorating does not have to be expensive!!

Let's take one last look with the candles lit. There's just something about that candlelight glow during the holidays!
