Mustard and rose master bedroom makeover plans

A cozy and collected master suite makeover with traditional and MCM details

It's no secret that I love all things vintage and farmhouse, but I also love many other decor styles. I've been following design trends since I was a freshman in college (which seems so long ago!), and I have developed an appreciation of all aspects of design. I can find beauty and inspiration in any style, and I also don't believe that anyone's style fits into one perfectly categorized box. It's fun to experiment and mix and match a bit! So when my mom asked me to help her design her bedroom and master bathroom, I jumped at the opportunity to play with a style other than my own!

My mom is one of those people who loves everything. Seriously. Everything! She loves all colors and all styles! But I also don't peg her as truly eclectic, at least not in the maximalist sense of the word. She has told me many times that rooms with two many pillows, patterns, knick knacks, and clutter overwhelm her. But she is far from a minimalist- she owns many collections, loves pattern and color, and the more picture frames of family, the better!

So we sat down together to look at colors and style examples to really hone in on what elements she truly loves the most out of all the styles she loves, and how we could incorporate them all in a way that would complement each other without overwhelming each other.

She tends to like warmer colors and her favorite has always been yellow, so we chose a warm mustard color to subtly carry through both rooms. She chose a soft warm rose color to complement it, which I think was a beautiful choice! Bringing in some brass accents and warm wood tones, I think we have a design plan that suites her love of everything but still feels very cohesive! It's going to look beautiful!

Some of the items above have already been purchased, and some are just part of the overall vision but are still subject to change. We'll see where we end up!

Below, I have included some photos of the spaces we are starting with and our overall plans. They're just poorly lit cell phone photos, but hopefully you can get an idea of the layout and envision the changes we plan to make!

Master bedroom plans

  • Paint the walls a light neutral to brighten the space
  • Install new flooring (she chose Lumber Liquidators "Odessa Ash")
  • Use existing bedframe. Add dark grey quilt and fun throw pillows.
  • Replace nightstands with some that have storage that isn't visible.
  • Stain Ikea nightstands and dressers and add hardware. Potentially add MCM legs if possible. Replace the grey dressers with these refreshed pieces.
  • Install bedside sconces so that tilted lamp shade reading scenario can stop 😉
  • Update window treatment with floor to ceiling curtains.
  • Find and update a vintage chair.
  • Mount television to the wall.
  • Hang meaningful artwork including a weaving that my sister is making 💛

Master bathroom plans

  • Paint the existing vanity and change the hardware.
  • Install new countertop.
  • Install new brass sink/shower/tub faucets and accessories.
  • Install brass light fixture with three to four lights to extend over mirrors.
  • Hang artwork under light fixture to balance the space.
  • Find new mirrors or update the existing ones.
  • Find a long bath rug to extend across the vanity length.
  • Blush or grey towels.
  • Replace towel rods, toilet paper holder, etc.
  • Hang artwork.
This is a fun project that is challenging me creatively. I love working with styles other than my own and it was a true test of my design skills to work with my mom to figure out what she loves. I am so excited to see it all come together!  I'll share the reveal as soon as it's all done! :)
