DIY Rustic Laundry Room Canvas

Okay, okay… I know I’ve been dragging you along waiting for the laundry room reveal… I PROMISE this is the last project before you get to see the whole thing! Pinky promise! I’ve spent the last few weeks collecting pretty rustic and farmhouse decor to put on the laundry room shelves, but I started to feel like the walls needed a little something extra. Other than the rustic ironing board hanger I made, there is nothing on the walls. So, I decided to try making one of those cute farmhouse wood trimmed canvases I’ve been seeing all over Pinterest lately.

I found tons of them for sale, but I had trouble finding many tutorials, so I kinda just had to wing it! My method is certainly not perfect, and there are some things I would do differently next time, but I do love how my canvas turned out for this particular space! Here’s what you need…

Materials:

-artist canvas
-black permanent marker
-clear wax
-brown wax
-wood lattice trim
-wood stain (I used “Dark Walnut” by Minwax)
-super glue

First, I used my absolute favorite method for transferring text to add the word “LAUNDRY” going down the length of my blank canvas. You can get my step by step tutorial for transferring text here. I used my favorite marker for making signs, but I think next time I would use a regular permanent marker because I actually had problems with the archival ink bleeding under the wax.

I truly had no clue how I was going to get the aged look I was going for. I’ve never worked with wax before, but knew plenty of people use dark wax for aging furniture, so why not try it on canvas? I had no idea what I was doing, but with a little bit of research, I was able to get started. I gave the entire canvas a coat of clear wax first. I used a disposable cloth to rub it on (I buy these cloths in bulk at Home Depot because they come in handy for so many types of projects!). I let that coat dry for 24 hours. (below you can see how the archival ink bled a little bit during waxing)

Then I rubbed on dark wax with a new cloth in a circular motion. At first, it was too dark, and I was terrified that I had ruined my project! But, I was able to save the day with a slightly damp cloth! Phew! I rubbed away the wax from some of the darker areas. Like I said, I had some smearing of the ink when I was waxing, so I tried to use it to my advantage and rub the smears outward further into the canvas to add to the aged look. It’s not perfect, but it turned out okay! (totally forgot to take a picture of the dark wax itself... so here's a close up after I framed it! Oopsy!)

While that was drying, I created my wooden frame. I cut the lattice trim to size and quickly stained it using my favorite stain and another one of those great disposable cloths! I didn’t bother to seal or varnish it.

Once the canvas was dry, I framed it out using super glue! I didn’t have any small enough nails that could hold it together without splitting the wood, so I hoped a little super glue would do the trick. And it did! I added a small amount to the ends of the trim to hold them to each other, and I also applied a little along the edge of the canvas to attach the frame to the canvas. I was worried that the glue might not stick to the waxed surface, but it worked fine and the frame fit snugly, so I wasn’t worried about it sliding off anyway.

I hung it up and stood back to admire the finally finished laundry room! It felt so good to see the last finishing touch hanging on the wall! I’m so excited that this huge project is finally finished and I can’t wait to share it with you!

  1. This is the cutest, Nicole! I love that it's on canvas, too! The dark wax is perfection. Please make me one, haha! :)
