April Monthly DIY Challenge- Dollar Store Cutting Board Art

Woohoo! It's monthly challenge time again! Unfortunately, I had to skip last month's challenge, but I'm excited to be joining in on this one! If you haven't seen our monthly DIY challenge yet, the second Wednesday of each month, myself and some of my awesome bloggy friends choose an item or theme to DIY with. We each come up our own individual project using that month's guidelines. For examples, visit my Monthly DIY Challenge page!

Monthly DIY Challenge

This month's challenge was dollar store creations. We each perused the aisles of a local dollar store to look for an inspiring item to create something out of. I don't have a traditional dollar store near me, but I did find an individually owned dollar store in the mall where all items were under ten dollars. I walked up and down the aisles and found this cutting board with a fish eye hook and key ring installed, ready to hang. Duh, this could become easy wall art!!!!

I gave my cutting board a coat of paint with DecoArt's Chalky Finish paint in "primitive."

Then I chose a quote from a Dave Matthews song to use as word art. I played with different fonts and sizes in Microsoft Word and printed them out. Then I used my favorite text transfer technique to transfer my chosen fonts to the cutting board.

I shaded the back of each word with a lead pencil. Then I arranged them on the cutting board and retraced them with a pen. When I lifted the paper, a pencil outline was left, which I then traced with a black marker. For more details and a step by step tutorial on how to do this, please see my text transfer page

I love making wall art and signs using this technique, so finding this pre-hung cutting board was absolutely perfect!!

This piece will go on our collage wall in the dining room, which I am still collecting pieces for. Once it is completed, I will update with a photo of this artwork hanging on the wall!

Be sure to check out the rest of the dollar store creations! My super creative friends have put together some awesome ideas!

  10. I just love your transfer projects - that technique is so brilliant! I really love how this turned out. Your dollar store sells way better stuff than mine - I couldn't find anything near as cool as that cutting board!
