Monthly DIY Challenge- Industrial Pipe Floor Lamp

8 DIY Plumbing Piece Projects

I can't believe it's February!!! It's already time for the Monthly DIY Challenge again, and I am SO excited for this month's challenge item! We chose to use plumbing pieces!! I've seen tons of pipe project ideas out there which would go perfectly with our semi-industrial themed home decor! I decided to make a floor lamp because we desperately need more lighting in our living room. With a little inspiration from this pin, I developed a plan!

Materials:
-Quick set cement mix (I used Quikrete)
-5 gallon bucket
-3/4 inch coupling (2)
-3/4 inch x 2.5 inch steel pipe nipple (1)
-5 foot black steel pipe
-8 foot silver lamp cord (the above kit comes with a cord, but I didn't want brown!)
-Lamp shade (Mine is from Target)

First, attach a coupling and the steel pipe nipple by screwing them together. The coupling gives the cement something to form around. This will help with stability and keep the pipe from sliding out of the cement. The steel nipple is what you will attach the rest to. I put a piece of painter's tape on the bottom to keep cement getting inside the parts.

Place the connected parts into the bottom of your bucket, tape side down.

Mix the cement in a separate bucket. Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. Then, fill in around your plumbing pieces. Leave at least 1/4 inch of the steel nipple above the cement. Smooth the top with a straight edge (I used an old credit card).

Follow the instructions for curing the cement. My mixture required 48 hours of drying time.

Once dry, carefully cut the bucket off of the cement base you have created. My husband helped me cut away the plastic using a utility knife. Once the plastic is removed, you will probably find a thin layer of cement over the painters tape you applied on the bottom. Use a screw driver to poke a hole in the bottom and remove the painters tape. Use sand paper to smooth the top of the cement lamp base.

Spray paint the floor flange, the second coupling, and the pipe with Rustoleum's oil rubbed bronze spray paint or whatever color you desire. You may want to clean the pipe with steel wool and dish soap to remove grease before painting. Here's my spray painted parts...

Slide the floor flange over the fitting that is sticking out of the cement. Screw the coupling onto the pipe nipple threads.

Next, screw the pipe into the coupling. Follow the instructions for your lamp kit and thread the cord through the pipe, fittings, and lamp base.

Attach the lamp shade of your choice to the top of your lamp kit harp.

What do you think? For the most part, this project was pretty easy, but there is still some tweaking I would like to do. Here's a few of my after thoughts. My lamp is a little tall, so I may try to cut the pipe or attach a fitting to make the lampshade hang lower. I also will probably apply some felt to the bottom of the cement base to keep it from scratching the floor.
