Spring Tulip Planters

DIY Painted Spring Planters- An easy Easter craft and great gift idea!
My husband's family has an Easter tradition of giving each family a gift. It's usually something simple like a potted plant or flower. This year I wanted to give them all something they could use again so I made these DIY spring planters! The pots can be used again and the tulip bulbs will grow back next year!

I gathered my terracotta pots and got to work!

I painted them with acrylic paint. I just used whatever pastel colors I had on hand. I painted the rims first and let them dry so that I could flip the pot upside down to do the rest.

Terracotta is slightly absorbent, so I had to do multiple coats. The natural orange color also shows through lighter paint colors, so the lighter the color, the more coats it needed.

After painting, I took them outside and planted my bulbs!

I found these cute little chalkboard tags at Target (here are some more options on Amazon.). Did you know they have a whole section of chalkboard tags, labels, and signs now? I used the same font transfer method that I used in my mail tray tutorial. I ended up using a soapstone pencil for the lettering because it gave me much thinner lines than chalk did.

I tied the tags on with some twine. They are just so cute and happy looking! I'm wishing I had made one for myself!

I can't wait to give them to our family on Sunday!

  1. I've never heard of a soapstone pencil. Now that's on my crafting wish list. That is such a handy method for transferring fonts. I use it all the time!

    1. I actually bought the pencil at Crate and Barrel. It was meant for labeling a cheese slate. I've never even used it before, but when I realized chalk was too big for this project, I gave it a whirl and it was perfect!! It writes just like chalk too!
